State of AI Brand Visibility 2026: Who Gets Recommended and Why

We spent 8 weeks running structured prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok to answer a simple question: when people ask AI for product recommendations, who gets mentioned?
The results are striking. AI brand visibility is more concentrated than Google search ever was. A handful of brands in each category capture the vast majority of recommendations, and the gap between the top 3 and everyone else is enormous.
This report covers 15 software categories, 5 AI platforms, and over 3,000 individual prompt responses. Every data point comes from real queries run against production AI models between January and March 2026.
Methodology
We designed 20 prompts per category, covering common buying scenarios:
- Direct recommendation queries ("What is the best CRM for small businesses?")
- Comparison queries ("Compare Salesforce and HubSpot for mid-market companies")
- Use-case specific queries ("What tools should a remote team use for project management?")
- Problem-solution queries ("How do I reduce customer churn?")
- Budget-specific queries ("What is the best free email marketing tool?")
Each prompt was run across all 5 platforms 3 times (to account for response variation), producing 900 responses per category and 13,500+ total responses across the study.
We extracted brand mentions from each response using automated NLP analysis with manual verification for ambiguous cases. A "mention" counts when the AI explicitly names a brand as a recommendation, comparison point, or example.
The Concentration Problem
The single most important finding: AI recommendations are extremely concentrated.
Across all 15 categories, the top 3 brands captured an average of 78% of all mentions. In some categories, it was over 90%.

Compare this to Google search, where the top 3 organic results capture roughly 55-60% of clicks. AI recommendations are 20-35 percentage points more concentrated than traditional search results.
This means that if your brand is not in the top 3 for your category, AI is effectively invisible to you as a distribution channel. There is no "page 2" equivalent. There are no long-tail queries where smaller brands naturally surface.
Platform Divergence: Where Do AI Models Disagree?
Not all AI platforms recommend the same brands, though the overlap is significant.
ChatGPT and Claude have the highest recommendation overlap at roughly 80%. This makes sense given similar training data sources and model architectures. If your brand appears in ChatGPT, it very likely appears in Claude too.
Perplexity diverges the most from the pack. Because Perplexity relies heavily on real-time web retrieval (RAG), it surfaces newer brands and more niche options that other models miss. Brands that invested in recent, well-structured content saw 25-40% higher mention rates on Perplexity compared to ChatGPT.
Grok shows a notable bias toward brands with strong presence on X (Twitter). Brands that actively post and engage on X appeared 15-20% more frequently in Grok responses compared to their baseline across other platforms.
Gemini tracks closely with Google Search results, unsurprisingly. Brands that rank well in traditional Google search tend to appear more frequently in Gemini responses. This suggests Google is leveraging its search index as a signal for Gemini's recommendations.

What Makes a Brand "AI-Recommendable"?
We analyzed the top-performing brands across categories to identify common characteristics that correlate with high AI visibility.
1. Third-Party Authority (Strongest Signal)
Brands that appear across G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, Wikipedia, and industry comparison articles are recommended far more frequently than brands that only have strong first-party content.
The data is clear: brands mentioned in 10+ authoritative third-party sources are 5x more likely to appear in AI recommendations than brands with comparable products but fewer external mentions.
This is the hardest signal to manufacture and the most valuable to earn. AI models treat third-party mentions as validation signals. Your website says you are great. G2 reviews, analyst reports, and independent comparisons prove it.
2. Content Specificity
Brands with detailed, question-answering content outperform brands with generic marketing pages. When your content directly answers the questions people ask AI ("What is the best CRM for small businesses?"), AI can extract and verify your claims more easily.
The brands ranking highest in our study all had extensive comparison pages, detailed feature documentation, and comprehensive FAQ content. Marketing fluff does not register.
3. Structured Data Implementation
Brands with comprehensive schema markup (Organization, Product, FAQ, Review, HowTo) appeared 40% more often in AI responses than brands with comparable authority but no structured data.
This is one of the fastest wins available. Schema markup takes hours to implement but permanently improves how AI models parse and understand your content. Use JSON-LD generators to create the markup, then deploy it across your key pages.
4. LLMs.txt Adoption
This is the newest signal and adoption is still low. Among the 225 brands in our study, only 12% had an LLMs.txt file deployed. But those that did saw 18% higher mention rates on average, particularly on Perplexity and ChatGPT which actively look for these files.
An LLMs.txt file tells AI crawlers exactly what your product is, what it does, and what content matters most. It removes ambiguity. You can generate one in under a minute.
5. Recency and Update Frequency
Content that was updated within the last 90 days was referenced more frequently than stale content, especially by platforms using RAG (Perplexity, ChatGPT with browsing). Brands that treat their content as a living asset rather than a publish-and-forget artifact have a meaningful advantage.
The Incumbent Advantage (And How to Compete)
The data shows a clear incumbent advantage. Brands that were well-established before the AI era started with stronger training data embeddings, more third-party mentions, and more authoritative content. They show up in AI recommendations because they were already widely discussed.
For challengers, this creates a chicken-and-egg problem: you need AI visibility to grow, but you need to be well-known to get AI visibility.
However, the picture is not entirely bleak for newer brands. Here is what works:
Own a Niche Before Expanding
Brands that targeted specific sub-categories rather than competing in broad categories performed disproportionately well. Instead of trying to compete with Salesforce for "best CRM," target "best CRM for freelancers" or "best CRM with built-in invoicing."
AI models respond to contextual specificity. A brand that is clearly the best answer for a narrow query will be recommended for that query even if it is unknown in the broader category.
Invest in Comparison and Alternative Content
Pages like "YourProduct vs Competitor" and "Top 5 Alternatives to [Market Leader]" are heavily retrieved by AI models during RAG. These pages explicitly position your brand in the competitive landscape and give AI models the context they need to recommend you.
Build Platform-Specific Strategies
Given the platform divergence we observed, investing in the platforms where your brand has the best chance matters:
- If you are newer, Perplexity is your best entry point (RAG-heavy, surfaces recent content)
- If you have strong social presence, Grok amplifies X/Twitter signals
- If you rank well on Google, Gemini will likely follow
- For ChatGPT and Claude, focus on authoritative third-party mentions and structured data
What This Means for Marketing Teams
The shift from traditional SEO to AI visibility requires a fundamental change in how marketing teams allocate resources.
Stop Optimizing Only for Google
Google is still the largest search engine, but its share of discovery is declining. AI-assisted search is growing at 30%+ year-over-year. Marketing teams that allocate 100% of their SEO budget to Google rankings are ignoring a rapidly growing channel.
We recommend a 70/30 split: 70% traditional SEO, 30% AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). As AI search grows, this ratio should shift accordingly.
Measure What Matters
If you are not tracking your brand's AI visibility, you are flying blind. Set up monitoring across all major AI platforms. Track mention frequency, sentiment, and competitive positioning. Use tools like Orbilo's brand monitoring to automate this.

Technical Foundations First
Before investing in content and outreach, get the technical foundations right:
- Deploy structured data across all key pages

- Get your AEO score to identify gaps
- Ensure your site is accessible to AI crawlers (check robots.txt)
These take days to implement and create permanent improvements.
Predictions for the Rest of 2026
Based on the trends we are seeing:

AI recommendation concentration will increase. The rich-get-richer effect is accelerating. Brands that are already well-represented in AI training data will strengthen their position with each model update.

Perplexity will become the most important platform for challengers. Its RAG-heavy approach gives newer brands a real chance to appear in recommendations without needing deep training data presence.

LLMs.txt adoption will cross 30% among top SaaS brands by December 2026. The standard is gaining traction and AI platforms are increasingly looking for it.

AEO will become a standard marketing function. Just as SEO became a dedicated discipline 15 years ago, AEO will emerge as a distinct function within marketing teams. The companies hiring for it now will have a 12-18 month head start.

The "zero-click" trend will accelerate. More people will make purchasing decisions based on AI recommendations without ever visiting a traditional search engine. Brands that are invisible to AI will lose discovery opportunities they never knew they had.
